I wanted to tell everyone about an event coming up a week from this Friday...this is an event hosted by the Meetup group Ex-NewYorkers in Raleigh - please do not feel that you have to be a New Yorker to attend This event will help a woman who is facing the complications of a tragic illness in a country whose health care has left her behind. What: Bowling for Margie Fundraiser When: Friday, July 27, 7:00 PM Where: Click the link below to find out! Event Description: $15 per person for 2 games of bowling (includes the shoe rental) AMF Bowling Center in Cary will donate $50 per lane for every lane of bowlers we can fill. (6 bowlers to a lane - 32 lanes x $50 = $1600) They are also working on additional donations to the cause. Please bring your friends, neighbors, relatives to help support this cause!! A Meetup aquaintance named Margie was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. She was in the midst of a divorce and her ex-husband dropped her from his health insurance in the fall. She could not afford to pay for all of her necessary medications and the cancer spread to her bones. During this time her son was defending our country in Iraq and lost his life. This past year has just been horrific for her. She is now facing the battle of her life in order to save her jawbone and keep her face from collapsing - and she needs our help. The cost of surgery is outrageous, but every little bit we can raise will get her closer to a better quality of life. Below is a letter written by her good friend Karla McDaniel: "She has breast cancer that has spread throughout her bones and continues waging war on her body. It is now attacking her bone in the right side of her face, the one that connects to the jaw bone. Margie is a fighter...indeed, a champion. She is battling with all her strength, heart, mind, spirit and emotion. Margie's health insurance was canceled by her ex-husband last Fall. But she is not the only one presented with a challenge. We--as a community of family members, a group of friends, and a community consisting of neighbors near and far--have a challenge to help our neighbor, our friend. We can look at this opportunity to help not as a duty, but rather as a privilege. When we discovered that Margie is in need of a $10,000 surgery to keep her face from collapsing we were shocked. And then when we found out that social services would not pay for the surgery because it was labeled as "cosmetic surgery" we were outraged and knew that we had to step in and help any way we could. Friends have already begun collecting money for this surgery and are trying to raise money with different fundraisers but there is so little time...the hinge on one side of her jaw bone is so brittle it could snap off at any time. If that happens they will have to insert a feeding tube into her mouth because she won't be able eat on her own. She has expressed to me that she does not want her little grandson to see her that way. I am sure that some of you may be curious about medical expenses. Margie sees her oncologist and fills prescriptions several times each month. Her prescriptions alone are around $2,000 a month. Her compassionate doctors have continuely paid for her vital prescriptions but the ones that she needs to help her with pain management and to help fight off the cancer she has had to go without. Sadly, her cancer might have never spread as much and as quickly as it has if she would have been able to take all of her medications. All of these, in addition to various medical treatments and other miscellaneous expenses, add up. Friends from all over have been generous with their love and affection and prayers since she got sick and especially when she lost her only son (he was just 23) in the war in Iraq, last December. Margie has told me how humbled she is by all the food deliveries, visits and also the encouraging e-mails and letters. Margie's email address is margieh777@yahoo.com if you would like to send her a personal message. But what can you do to practically help? The surgery is crucial to prevent her face from collasping and to relieve her of the agonizing pain. This is where we have the opportunity to serve. There is no time to set up a fund for Margie before she needs this money. This is not a public charity. As such, you will not be able to take a charitable deduction. But I encourage you to make a generous donation because a more valuable benefit will be yours. You will be offering a wonderful person compassion, grace, mercy, and love that will fill your heart throughout your life. If you want to help Margie, here is a material, meaningful, and timely way to intercede. Margie does not have to go through this alone. We, as friends and neighbors, and community, should consider it an honor to contribute to her care. Compared to the challenges that Margie now faces, ours is an easy one. Please share as richly as you have received. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact me at: kdmcdaniel@nc.rr.com |

| That is an incredible story and my heart goes out to Margie. I am going to be out of town on the evening of the event. Is the group doing anything else to help? |
